The new exhibition, mainly centered on portable icons, iconostasis doors and detached wall paintings, dating from 12th to the 18th century, lays emphasis on the abundant cultural wealth of the byzantine fortress town, but also on the socio-economic framework that gave rise to the profusion, a city that despite its regional character preserved its splendour and prestige both in Byzantine and post-Byzantine times (9th-19th century). The redisplay revolves around two thematic axes: “The icons of Kastoria as a reason to be acquainted with one of the most important byzantine cities”, mainly chronological axis…It is divided into units: Byzantine Kastoria – Post-Byzantine Kastoria – Artistic Workshops in Post-Byzantine Kastoria. “The icon as an expression of Orthodoxy and an object of worship, but also as a communication code in the Byzantine worl"d. The visual material is predominant here. All the icons on display, as well as a small number of coins and jewels that form part of the exhibition timeline, are linked to this axis.
